During the two week Mud Festival period the beach-side town of Boryeong is transformed into mud heaven and the small town is flooded with an excess of two million people from all over Korea, particularly expats, who come for a taste (or hopefully not!) of this unusual, fun-filled, nothing-quite-like-it festival.
Inside the mud area of 'Mud Experience Land' are a number of inflatable slides as well as an inflatable assault course, a mud pool and a mud prison. And nobody comes out clean. You can also get yourself painted in coloured mud which I did this year and that, despite the very long queuing time, was a lot of fun.
After you've had enough of being filthy and covered in mud, and it's not long before my OCD alarm bells start to ring, believe me, people head to the beach to attempt to clean most of the mud off in the sea.
Because I went as part of an organised tour this year I stayed for the whole weekend and the festivities continued, in spite of the rain, back at our pension and long into the night including a dip in the pool, the discovery of a random little sauna room, an amazing BBQ tea, lots of soju, cards games and the the biggest mosquito massacre the world has ever seen!!
Before heading back to Seoul the following day we stopped off at the festival once again, but kept it clean this time, opting for a coffee and a sit down (can't handle like I used to!) before having lunch together.
Mud Fest is great fun and something that everyone living in Korea should experience! I'm just so sad that I won't have the chance to go again next year. Well who knows, I could always come back for the weekend! :)
